Why, Hello there!

Hi, I’m Jess and welcome to my first ever blog!

I am writing this blog as it is a requirement of my Communication in the Sciences paper at Massey University.  Over the next several weeks I expect to cover some interesting topics, but for now, an introduction is required.  I am 27 years of age and reside in Christchurch.  I enjoy Crossfit and eating junk food in equal measures.  The apple of my eye is my French Bulldog called Petunia.  She is perfect in almost every way, except that she regularly does horrific and deadly gas expulsions from her rear end, aka stinky farts.

I work as an employment consultant, specialising in helping people with disabilities (both physical and mental/emotional) prepare for and find sustainable employment.  I love my job and find every day interesting.  Employment consulting is a new field for me, previously I was employed as a Home Loan Specialist for various banks.  I stumbled into a banking career straight out of high school and did very well for myself, but found it to be a soulless, mind numbing career.  I finally realised that I needed a job where I could make a direct impact on people’s lives and not just make profit for the fat cats overseas.

I am aiming to complete a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Rehabilitation by 2020.  My interest in psychology comes from a keen interest in the way people’s minds work.  Rehabilitation can loosely be defined as re-enabling an individual to complete their daily tasks and participate in life situations.  This is an industry that I believe we are going to need to invest in more and more in the coming years.   Environmental disasters, human conflict, unpredictable presidents and even simple factors such as aging, are likely to result in more people having to manage newly acquired disabilities.

From this course I hope to improve my writing skills, neither of my professions have had a large demand for written documentation.  My friends, customers and even my neighbours will likely attest that my verbal communication skills are well developed.  I’m looking forward to learning and expanding my skill set!

Nice introduction Jess. You seem like a genuinely caring individual and will make a great psychologist.

Hi Jess,

I really feel like this blog has illustrated who you are. You seem like a lovely person - and I can completely relate to a pet being so much more, Milly (my cat) is my Petunia.
Finding appropriate jobs for people with disabilities sounds incredibly rewarding. I am very impressed that you were able to recognise your need to have a soulful and fufilling job - what you do everyday is so important for mental health! I wish you all the best for your future studies - you have the right personality for psychology, and you definitely have the drive!
